The blend of a cool summer afternoon and mouth-watering fruits and vegetables made for a tranquil tour of the 37-acre Vollmecke Orchards & CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in the scenic hills of West Brandywine Township of Pennsylvania. “Nature must balance itself,” stated by chief farmer Karen Vollmecke, is the reason that for over 25 years Vollmecke Orchards has been dedicated to sustainable farming methods and IPM, integrated pest management, to enrich the soil and support healthy plant growth. Karen took the group on a lovely tour of the wide-variety of the organic fruit and vegetable gardens, including watermelon, raspberries, leafy greens, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes and more, and further explained the sustainable practices used. As well as a producer of fruits and vegetables, Vollmecke Orchards boasts a 150-member CSA program, and distributes to local restaurants, markets and retail customers.
