INFRA Responds to Whole Foods Labeling Announcement
March 13, 2013 – The announcement by Whole Foods leverages the visibility on the subject of
mandatory labeling, increasing awareness to a mission that independent retailers nationwide long since initiated. INFRA applauds Whole Foods and other retailers who are supporting the labeling initiative.
Independent Natural Food Retailers Association (INFRA) members have been and continue to make changes to their product selections to avoid GMOs by choosing products with ingredients that are organic or non-GMO verified through the Non-GMO Project. Many INFRA stores have been in the forefront of GMO labeling and have taken a lead in pushing manufacturers to remove GMOs from their products. Some INFRA stores have already put policies into place that say they will not allow any new products into their store if the product contains any at risk GMO ingredients unless the product has been verified by the Non-GMO Project or the ingredient is organic.
“INFRA has been fortunate to have the two founding retailers of the Non-GMO Project as part of
their association. This connection and networking has allowed our independent retailers to be on the forefront of requesting verification from industry partners and/or removing products with high risk ingredients from their shelves,” says Corrine Shindelar, INFRA CEO.
In October 2012, over 1,500 retailers nationwide participated in Non-GMO month. The first Non-
GMO month, 10-10-10 (October 10, 2010) was inspired by Jimbo Someck, owner of Jimbo’s…Naturally! As an industry leader and on the forefront of eliminating products with GMO
ingredients from his four locations in San Diego, California, he has provided leadership to other
independent retailers and taken the lead on the avoidance of GMOs in his stores for the past four
years. “For a number of years, many INFRA members have taken the lead on the GMO issue.
Whole Foods’ announcement is tremendously exciting as their visibility and overall purchasing
power will hopefully be what the industry needs to reach the critical mass necessary to have
products that contain GMOs labeled as such! This is exactly what we need to move the labeling of GMOs initiative forward,” says Jimbo.
INFRA is a cooperative owned and governed by natural and organic food retailers of all sizes
working together to leverage their voice in the industry by uniting for the purpose of providing
operational support, leveraging purchasing power and increasing opportunities to reach consumers.
INFRA’s retail members work together to enhance independents' position in the marketplace
through a collaborative brain trust equaling years of industry experience. As one of the fastest
growing key accounts in the natural channel, INFRA has captured the attention of the natural food
industry.

What’s the Brownback Memorial Scholarship Fund?
Arias M. Brownback was raised on his family’s farm in western Perry County and from an early age expressed an interest in farming. He attended his first PASA conference at the age of 18. Seeing fellow farmers dedicated to sustainable practices was a great inspiration to Arias. In his honor, PASA has established the Arias M. Brownback Memorial Scholarship Fund. Formed in 2001, this memorial fund is intended to inspire and aid young farmers to reach their full potential. This endowment is designed to help youth and other developing farmers attend the Farming for the Future Conference each year. The scholarship expresses PASA’s commitment to providing educational opportunities for those wishing to learn sustainable agriculture techniques and methods regardless of financial circumstances.
The scholarship is available to individuals who are currently farming or developing a sustainable farming enterprise. Conference scholarships will be awarded for up to the full cost of the two-day main conference registration fees plus a one-year PASA membership of the appropriate level. For more information and the application, visit www.pasafarming.org/conference
For over 20 years, the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) has worked to improve agriculture and create more transparent food systems throughout Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region. Working to connect farms, food and people to each other, PASA members build bridges between farmers and consumers so that everyone has access to fresh and sustainably produced food -- from “farm to fork”. Kimberton Whole Foods is proud to support and sponsor PASA and their events. “What’s good for the farmer is good for us. It’s good for society.” – Terry Brett
