Earth Day Celebration: A Community Partnership between Kimberton Waldorf School and Kimberton Whole Foods
RECYCLE your unwanted electronics!
On April 17, in celebration of Earth Day, KWS will hold an electronic waste collection from 9 am to 12 pm in the front parking lot.
Items to be collected include: computers, cell phones, keyboards, stereos, televisions, monitors, printers, cables, floppy disks, CDs, office machines, calculators, DVD and CD players, and more. Disposal of computer monitors require a $10 fee. The electronic waste will be recycled through A Plus Industries of Allentown, PA. Documentation of secure disposal will be provided upon request.
The E-waste collection will be followed by organic lunch and speakers on green topics like permaculture, living roofs, green building, etc. Local farmers, artists, and earth-friendly vendors, many of whom work with Kimberton Whole Foods, will offer displays and demonstrations. There will be face painting and a raffle for a mountain bike. Afternoon festivities go from 12 pm to 4 pm.
Among the substances of concern in electronics manufacturing are lead, mercury, cadmium and brominated flame retardants. These substances can cause problems if the products are not properly managed at end of life. Recycling reduces pollution and saves energy by extracting fewer raw materials from the earth.
For more information, go to the EPA website.: http://www.epa.gov/waste/partnerships/plugin/index.htm#content. A Short film by Annie Leonard,“The Story of Stuff,” also highlights the problem of waste disposal: http://www.storyofstuff.com/.
Volunteers are needed both for the Ewaste recycling event, as well as for the Earth Day festivities that follow. Contact Pat Andrien at 610-469-0905 or Briana Brant of Kimberton Whole Foods at 610-935-1444.

In a fundraiser that began at the end of December and wrapped up January 31st, $7,573.67 was raised for Aldo Magazzeni and Traveling Mercies. In true community spirit, money was donated by generous Kimberton Whole Foods customers. In addition, Kimberton Whole Foods has MATCHED all donations, bringing the grand total to $15,147,34. The fundraiser will help Aldo in his future projects in Afghanistan, Kenya, and Mexico, and it will help improve the quality of life of hundreds of people.
Aldo Magazzeni is a local man that has helped improve the quality of life of people all over the world. Through his foundation, Traveling Mercies, Aldo works to promote peace by assisting communities in need through the most appropriate and resourceful methods. He believes in human equality and that it can be achieved through compassion, love, and sharing our life experiences. He not only empowers people with knowledge and life skills, but also with confidence and a sense of hope for humanity.
In December and January, Aldo Magazzeni personally hosted several talks at Kimberton Whole Foods locations to share future projects and photographs taken during his humanitarian missions. These were wonderful community events.
Currently, we are holding a second fundraiser to specifically benefit the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. This fundraiser will run until the end of February, with collection containers at Kimberton Whole Foods’ registers.
Aldo has just returned from Haiti, and will speak of his experience at an event on 2/24/10 in the Café of the Kimberton Store. The event will run from 7-9pm, with light dinner provided. Come and see Aldo’s photos of Haiti and hear him speak firsthand.
