As part of our whole foods commitment we cater to the gluten free lifestyle. We understand the difficulty of shopping for a gluten free diet so we strive to make things as easy for the gluten free shopper as possible. While you can find many gluten free products throughout the store we have also marked gluten free items with green half moons which can be found with the item price on the shelf below each product. This allows our gluten free customers to shop with more ease and peace of mind that the items they can eat are easily identifiable on our shelves. Many Kimberton Whole Foods staff members are well versed in the gluten free items in our stores, so please feel free to ask when you visit if you have any additional questions, or with help finding what you’re looking for.
A gluten-free diet is a diet that excludes gluten. Gluten is found in wheat and other foods and is used in many processed foods as ‘dextrin’, or a flavor enhancing thickening agent and stabilizer. Currently a gluten free diet is the only proven treatment for celiac disease and has been known to help autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as well as other conditions. In addition, people with no diagnosed conditions have found a gluten-free diet beneficial to their overall health.
While wheat is a major source of gluten protein a Wheat-free diet is not the same as a Gluten-free diet. People with a wheat allergy are allergic to the proteins in wheat and not necessarily the gluten protein. People with a wheat allergy need to avoid all foods with wheat and wheat by-products. The wheat free diet excludes wheat globulins and wheat albumin. Kimberton Whole Foods also stocks products friendly to those on wheat free diets. Celiac disease It is estimated that about 2 million people in the United States have celiac disease, or about 1 in 133 people. There are two categories of symptoms for celiac disease: 1) signs and symptoms due to malabsorption, and 2) signs and symptoms due to malnutrition including vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Symptoms range from gastrointestinal problems to Anemia and Infertility. The medical community is just beginning to become aware of celiac disease and the advantages of a gluten-free diet.
Foods that contain the gluten protein in less than 20ppm are generally considered to be gluten free. Below is a general list of foods that do and do not contain gluten.
The list above is not a complete list. It is to be used as a general guide and not as a treatment for any condition. For more information please see our resources links;
