Meg's Eggs Recap
Written by Kirsten Harper Monday, 18 July 2011 11:09

With eighteen years of experience, eleven acres of land, and about 350 chickens, Meg and her husband, Joel, owners of Meg’s Eggs free-range farm, thoroughly enjoy raising chickens and producing the “happiest” fresh eggs for the Ottsville community every day.

At Meg’s Eggs, there are a total of about 350 birds with 24 separate breeds and six color variations, as well as endangered chickens and foster peeps.  Not only is this the place for chickens to roam free with fresh water, shade and protection provided naturally, it is also a miniature haven for other animals, including ducks, geese, deer, guinea birds and the owners’ cat, Garfield, who all get along with one another.

“It is the place to be,” says Meg. “All of the animals are friendly and happy because they are in their natural environment.  Their diet includes natural grains, fruit and veggie scraps, and oyster shells.  The chickens live life eating whatever they want and do whatever they want, and they certainly have distinct personalities to show it.”  Every day at Meg’s Eggs is a humorous adventure, and a great way to learn and interact with the free-range happy chickens up close and personal.

Meg’s Eggs are distributed to the neighbors and Kimberton Whole Foods in Ottsville, Pennsylvania within 24 hours.  The next time you are in the Ottsville area, stop by Meg’s Eggs farm to visit the friendliest chickens and Kimberton Whole Foods to receive the freshest and “happiest” eggs on the market!

Highspire Hills Farm Tour Recap
Written by Kirsten Harper Monday, 11 July 2011 11:03

For twenty years, Duane and Deborah, owners of Highspire Hills Farm, have been producing high-quality jumbo, large and extra-large brown eggs from the best layers around, the Golden Comet chickens.

“It all began as a hobby for Duane, who bought the farm years and years ago with only 50 chickens,” says Deborah, “and now today we have a total of about 1300 chickens all of which live comfortably and free to roam in a sustainable and practical ‘chicken hotel’ environment.”

At Highspire Hills Farm, there are organically-fed and conventionally-fed chickens.  One year ago, Duane and Deborah formed a partnership with Kimberton Whole Foods to raise non-GMO chickens, which are fed with non-GMO and organic feed, and now have a total of 250 organic birds!  As well as eating organic or conventional feed, all of the chickens at Highspire Hills eat the produce compost from KWF at Downingtown, and according to Deborah, “the chickens absolutely love the produce!”

With producing 45 dozen eggs a day and having a turnaround less than 7 days, Highspire Hills Farm delivers their eggs to specialty restaurants in the area, including Victory Brewing Company, Ron’s Original, Dilworthtown Inn and its Blue Pear Bistro, and of course Kimberton Whole Foods.  It even has its own farm store for family, friends, neighbors and anyone who would like to purchase the best eggs in town.  So the next time you are in the Downingtown area, stop by Highspire Hills Farm in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania to try the biggest and best naturally-produced brown eggs in the area!

Seven Stars Farm Tour Recap!
Written by Kirsten Harper Tuesday, 05 July 2011 09:32

For those of you who came out for the Seven Stars farm tour last Saturday 7/2/11 - thank you!

According to our summer Kimberton Whole Foods intern, Molly Conlin who took part in the tour, it went really well! There were 17 guests total, three of which were kids.

"The tour took place during the cows afternoon milking and it was clear to see that they were all happy and comfortable. There are 74 large stalls, each with a thick mat and plenty of hay for the cows to lay and munch on. They milk approximately three cows at a time using high tech equipment that carefully monitors the milk output so that the pressure is always comfortable and the pumps even self-remove from the udders when they are done.

Each cow is carefully monitored to ensure that they all stay healthy. If a cow does get sick, homeopathic remedies are used to heal them. For example, if a hoof gets punctured, a mixture of brown sugar and iodine is placed in the wound and wrapped up. They also have a maternity barn where we saw two pregnant cows relaxing and got to pet a two day old heifer-calf! She was beautiful!

They make all of the yogurt right there on the farm adding only cultures. Their flavors include maple syrup, vanilla, and lemon (their newest flavor). The guests all seemed to enjoy themselves and much was learned about biodynamic dairy farming."

Coming up! Seven Stars Farm Tour!
Written by Kirsten Harper Wednesday, 29 June 2011 12:43

Barbeques, fireworks and ...local organic yogurt?  Kicking off the Fourth of July weekend, as well as our 25thyear anniversary, Kimberton Whole Foods will be offering a farm tour of Seven Stars Farm this coming weekend.

As part of our 25th year anniversary, we will be recognizing our local farmers for their food contributions to providing Real Food from Local Roots and belief in organic and/or biodynamic farming methods. Throughout July and August, KWF will be hosting a variety of farm tours from dairy farms to poultry farms to orchards.

On Saturday, July 2nd from 3pm-5pm, join KWF for a wonderful tour of Seven Stars Farm to learn more about biodynamic and organic farming methods and the production of high-quality, European-style, local organic yogurt.  Seven Stars Farm is a 350 acre certified Biodynamic dairy farm located in northern Chester County, PA. Seven Stars yogurt is sold via natural foods distributors throughout the eastern United States (and can be found at Kimberton Whole Foods stores!)  One interesting fact is that before Kimberton Whole Foods became a full blown organic grocery store, it actually began in 1986 as the Seven Stars Farm store, selling exclusively yogurt!

Seven Stars Farm is located at 501 West Seven Stars Road, Phoenixville, Pa (closest to our Kimberton location). Farm tours are limited, so please visit our events page to reserve your spot!

Please go directly to the farm to attend the tour.  We encourage those who attend the farm tours to wear appropriate clothing and shoes, and to bring water and snacks as it may be hot.  At the farm, please be courteous of the farm and animals, and use discretion when disposing of your garbage.
