Shane Wolf, founder of Seed Phytonutrients, grew up on a farm in Kansas. Today, he lives on farmland in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he operates an animal rescue and grows flowers along with his partner, Shawn. “Farming makes me feel connected to the natural world,” he says.
Shane was working for L’Oreal for over a decade when he came up with the idea for Seed Phytonutrients: a brand focusing on improving the health of small-scale, organic farming by creating non-synthetic, sustainable, and effective natural beauty products. Whereas most brands buy raw ingredients on the open market, Seed would commission small, organic family farms to plant and harvest exclusively for the brand, and they would put farmers first by paying for harvests ahead of time, whether a crop succeeded or failed.
Along with his coworker, Brad Farrell, Shane took this idea to L’Oréal’s leadership. Today, Seed operates as an independent venture funded by the over 100-year-old French company, with offices right in Doylestown, PA. “It’s essentially a startup within a big company,” says Farrell.
The seed is the most concentrated part of the plant, where a plant’s nutrients are encased in their purest form. Seeds contain high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, phytosterols, carotene and vitamins A, C, D and E.
At Seed Phytonutrients, they only use cold press and expeller methods to extract oil from seeds (as opposed to using chemical solvents). These methods maintain the integrity of the oils and ensure the highest level of purity.
Supporting Local Farmers
To protect seeds from over-commercialization, the company partners with five independent American organic farmers to source sunflower oil, jojoba oil, camelina oil, carrot seed oil, and rolled oats. These farmers grow crops using local seeds that are sourced from the region they’re in. One of these farms, close to home and just around the corner from Seed Phytonutrients’ headquarters in Doylestown, is Barefoot Botanicals. This organic farm owned by Linda Shanahan and Eric Vander-Hyde is one of their sources for sunflower seeds, and was one of the first farms they began working with in 2017. They also use the farm as a working lab for future development to see what’s possible to grow in the region, and as a teaching space.
Prior to working with Seed Phytonutrients, Linda and Eric only grew sunflowers as a cut flower but never for the seeds. It turns out that few farms are growing seeds for oil production in this area because imported oils are so readily available and inexpensive. Linda feels that growing plants for oil is a lost art that is coming back: oil is the last frontier of local agriculture.
“We believe in supporting American organic farmers so they are able to continue their way of life, and provide us with the ingredients we value so deeply,” says Shane. “That’s why we pay for 100% of their crops up front, regardless of yield. This allows farmers to reinvest in their farms and plan for their future harvests.”
Seed Phytonutrients uses environmentally friendly recycled and recyclable packaging for all of their products. Their shower-friendly paper bottles are made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper with a post-consumer recycled plastic liner, resulting in 60% less plastic than a traditional bottle. Seed Phytonutrients has also partnered with TerraCycle® to create a free recycling program for their pumps. Save up your pumps and request a free recycling envelope here.
“We feel that it’s our responsibility to lead the way and promote environmental sustainability for the beauty industry as a whole,” says Shane.
Seeds for a Cause
Seed saving is extremely important because it creates diversity in plant species that help protect them from pests, diseases and changes in climate. Seed Phytonutrients has made it their mission to do their part in saving the seed varieties that we have left. Inside every one of their paper bottles, you’ll find a Hudson Valley Seed Company heirloom seed packet. By sharing seeds with their customers, the brand aims to create more resilient plants across our planet.
Seed Phytonutrients is also an active part of our local community through their sponsorship of local programming like the Doylestown Arts Festival and Doylestown Pride. Look for Seed Phytonutrients products at your neighborhood Kimberton Whole Foods!
