We can’t get enough citrus fruit this winter!
Citrus fruit is commonly associated with summer dishes and recipes because of its refreshing, juicy texture and bright tangy flavors, but did you know that citrus is in season during the winter months? And for good reason…
- Hot lemon water first thing in the morning is the perfect way to safely cleanse your system; brighten your complexion and boost your energy. Add a little honey to hot lemon water to soothe that cough you can’t shake.
- Citrus is chock full of Vitamin C, and is rich in fiber, folate and Potassium.
- It is easy to combine citrus with other foods, like spinach or other greens, to pack an extra nutritious punch!
Another reason (as if you needed more!) to purchase citrus this season is to support farms who are making a difference…
Capay Organic, Capay Valley CA
Organic Family Farm since 1976
We’re proud to offer winter harvest selections of citrus and kale grown on the Capay family Farm. Founders, Kathleen Barsotti and Martin Barnes, believed in farming organically to preserve the land and improve the environmental health and local economy. Today, their farm goes beyond organic; they focus on renewable resources, preventing topsoil erosion, increasing the biodiversity of pollinators, and establishing a poly-culture farm crop rotation. Thaddeus Barsotti, farmer-in-chief, even has a harmonious belief in managing pests with nature. “[His] philosophy is to develop the farm ecosystem such that the plants can easily defend themselves. This means sometimes losing crops rather than using organic pesticides.”
After more than 30 years of organic farming, this second generation farm has maintained it’s vigor to supply seasonal, sustainably-grown produce. Pick up a Satsuma Mandarin for your Winter Wellness citrus fix and feel confident that you’re supporting a farm that’s improving the quality of our food, one generation at time!
